Drive Recovery

Okay so my sisters computer went tits up, on XP. *Someone* reinstalled windows neglecting to realise it would lose all her coursework.
The windows installer NTFS formatted it then wrote the new windows over the top...

Am I right in thinking the files are still burried in there but the File Allocation Tables have been lost?

Is there a way to retrieve these files without it costing a ridiculous amound of money?
