Anti Virus Software

I was just wondering how many people actually pay for their Anti Virus Software compared to those who are content with just using Freeware Stuff? Is there a big difference? Is it worth paying in the region of £30 a year for it? What are your thoughts on this!!

At the end of the day, regardless of what scope your AV is , your still at some sort of risk.

It very much depends on the user(s) on the PC in question. Most companies buy a comprehensive AV licences/application as there are so many users who will abuse the internet service. However for home and roaming users, weve only ever recommended the Free edition of AVG version 9.0.

If your a sensible user ( you being any user, not you specificially Yoda ) , this will provide an adequate level of security, in addtion to a decent firewall.

Is an E-Mail Scan included in the AVG? I used it in the past and changed to Antivir because it didnt support something I needed. Dont know what it was.

I use AVG and my work access authenticate this as an acceptible version of AV. As work is paraniod to the nth degree I would say that's a good recommendation.

Used Eset Smart Security (NOD32 + firewall) in the past. Very efficient. Something like 35 UER per year.

I now use Linux and treat Windows as a gaming console.

Another AVG fan here. Stuck with them for years. Almost felt guilty enough to buy a pay version at the start of the year, but my tight assed Highland background just wouldn't allow me to sell out my cultural expectations..

On my home PC's I rely upon the occasional scan with online trendmicro:

It is good at detecting infections, using an online database that you know is up to date. Their pay model is based on *fixes* which I don't need.

There's a good freeware rootkit detector on the same site.

And I work at a university where we have a campus agreement for McAfee free for everybody (including me!) but I'd prefer not to have it burdening my PC's at home...

*edit* FYI my PC at the office would periodically lock up at 100% cpu which taskmanager would suggest was McAfee (and I didn't really want to mess with it), until I noticed the default signature update cycle was 10am every day... changed this to 3am and problem solved.
