Re: fallout vagas ?

It's a new stand alone you don't need fallout 3. If you have the cash Fallout 3 is still an excellent game and worth the money. I've played it through twice and have a few of the DLC's as well.

It doesn't guide you completely and you can try harder areas before the map your "suppose" to follow but there is a map that helps you figure out where to go if you want.

New vegas is on my too buy list.

Re: fallout vagas ?

Fallout is an awesome game, and not difficult at all, you will get the hang of it very fast, especilly if you've played Oblivion or Morrowind. I think New Vegas will be awesome I'll buy it as soon as it comes out! :P

Re: fallout vagas ?

New Vegas won't explicitly guide you from start to finish as the main story is very open ended and non-linear, it will require some investigation and exploration. However, when you pick up any quest (of which there are a ton) the objectives will be marked on your map and your compas can track them.

It is stand alone, and there is little to no crossover, storywise, with Fallout 3. There will be quite a bit with Fallout 1 and 2 but it's not required reading

From everything I've heard I fully expect New Vegas to be an awesome game and definatly worth a look

Re: fallout vagas ?

For the most part I’d disagree with the RPS review

Just so you know where I'm coming from with this, Fallout 1 + 2 are my all time favourite games. I enjoyed Fallout 3 but not for any of the reasons that I enjoyed the first two so I was disappointed with it over all.

Fallout: New Vegas is very close to being the game I wanted F3 to be.

Basic comparison; Fallout 3 was an action game with role play elements, Fallout: New Vegas is a role playing game with action elements.

The Good:
  • There are loads of things to do, more than in 3. Been playing for 18 hours not even in Vegas yet which is where the main story is supposed to kick in.
Stats mean something this time. It's really difficult (if not impossible) to max out everything and become 'God of the Wasteland' you have to specialise and accept you'll be good at something’s and crap at others. They also offer a lot of special dialog options
Luckily all the quests cater for different approaches such as Action Boy, Stealth Boy, Science Boy, Charisma Boy etc
Combat has been improved, not just with the addition of iron sights but with how shots are calculated. In Fallout 3 all shots were dice rolls which made combat outside VATS feel awkward. Weapons now have a minimum strength and skill requirement if you meet these weapons behave how you'd expect them to in a FPS. If you don't you won't be very effective. One example is if you use the anti-material rifle without the required strength the recoil will knock you off your feet.
Dialog and voice acting are vastly improved as is the quest writing
As well as the different approaches to quests there’re often different sides to take and rarely is it clear cut good and evil but more the lesser of two evils.
Settlements feel more realistic and have clear goals and a purpose for being there. I t just feels real rather than a shooting gallery
Double the weapons of F3 and all have mods avalible
Reputation system, people don't hate you just because you look evil but because you've done evil things to them
    Lots of little interface improvements
Lots of references to Fallouts 1 and 2, not so much to 3
    It’s a more challenging game than Fallout 3, I like a challenge
The Bad:
  • Bugs!!! Lots of bugs most of which were in Oblivion but some new ones too (mouse acceleration is ridiculous). They have been quick to address the major ones (save game corruption) with 2 patches already released for PC and more to follow. There are a fair few community made fixes too http://geekmontage.com/texts/fallout-ne ... ag-saving/
There is currently a problem with slowdown on nvidia cards, some of the latest drivers added something the engine doesn’t like. nVidia are working on a fix you can wait or roll back to earlier drivers. There is also a fix that worked for some people on the above link
I haven't had any CTDs but my mate seems to get them every hour or so. Only real difference in our PC's is I’m on windows 7 he's on vista (the fool)
Aging engine, still some nice views and the new creatures look good but my god that engine can't do faces.
Animations have been improved but are still just horrible
Not as many visually exciting conclusions to quest i.e. nuclear explosions, giant robots. (I prefer the better written quest to this but I know people like things to explode)
    Enemy AI still terrible
It’s a more challenging game than Fallout 3 some people won't like the challenge
The Undecided:
  • Main story, not seen enough of it. All I know is it revolves around a three way (hehe) war for power and you’ll influence the outcome somehow. Should be good for replays... if nothing else.
Companions, they all have interesting stories and quests associated with them and you have better control over them but they’re still pretty dumb in combat and keep dying (not a problem if you don’t play in hardcore mode as they just get knocked unconscious)
Hardcore mode, the weighted ammo and companions dying have an effect on how you play but the need to eat, drink and sleep take so long to have an effect that they just become trivial micro management
Conclusion:
So is it worth £30? I bought the £50 CE and I don't regret it.

If you liked any of the previous Fallout games you’ll probably enjoy this. This is certainly a more in depth RPG than its predecessor but the improved combat and ability to kill all but one person in the game could provide enough entertainment for the action junky too. The game content is miles better than Fallout 3, but the bugs more noticable although not game breaking.

In my opinion it’s well worth a buy, but you may need to do some tinkering to get it to run smoothly...

Fallout:NV - The Essential Mods thread

0. D3DX9.DLL FIX
This is an absolute MUST for Fallout: New Vegas, and will resolve 99% of performance issues for 99% of players. Simply download the d3dx9.dll file and put it in C:\...\fallout new vegas\ . That's all. Nothing more required. Users have reported 50%-200% performance increases after installing this "mod". I personally saw my framerate go from 15-45fps to 40-75fps. The game apparently uses the incorrect form of DirectX9 (the game does not use DX10 or DX11). This .dll file tricks the game into thinking you have a GeForce 7900GS, which somehow makes it use the correct version. However it works, it's enough to know that it does work.

Note: you will have to reset your graphics settings after installing it, as it will detect your GPU as a 7900GS.
havent tested this, will be getting FNV for me burpday
