Went with the Moto G in the end, it was the best available for the minium outlay of additional cash.

hey good choice I reckon - a lot of phone for the money.
FWIW when my phone (Galaxy Note 3) updated from Android 4.3 to 4.4 Kitkat the battery life definitely improved even though interweb comment is much more about people concerned about battery drain issues. My main trick is to restart phone each night when I plug it in to charge - that kills all the residual app processes...
