2007 Compatability Pack

seeming as this topic has gone way off now subject now i cba to update it anymore.

as ive said before this was meant for people who have windows 7 installed and can give some info to people who were maybe thinking about trying the FREE version out. Talking about why you shouldnt upgrade was not what this was about, there are some more techie people around who like me, just wanted to take a look and see what its like and give some info to other who were also thinking about TESTING it out. This is not the FINAL version FFS so at the moment there is no reason to upgrade to it, this is purely for people who want to give it a spin .

please vent your engorged spleen against microsoft here, if you so wish.

this should help the slop from dripping over the edges into other threads.

Hey mate,

Well I know you want a simple answer but truth is... it depends on your hardware.

Windows 32 can address address more than 2Gb.. it actually around 3.1Gb so your doing alright on vista 32.
Performance gains with moving to windows 64? Most of the time its negligible. 90% of the shite in this thread is people thinking they must use every ounce of power there pc has to offer but most of the time for home users you will see very little in performance that makes it worth wiping your shit and starting again.

Even though this threads turned into a mess there are some intresting and very good points raised by some but if you are learning it can be hard to decifer what is real and what is pish.

Re: WINDOWS 7 PROS & CONS

McClane's pluses for Windows 7:
4GB + of RAM (64bit OS, I know there is XP64 but support for that is worse)
DirectX10 (future DX11 support)
Sexy new interface
Faster (for me)
let's face it these aren't exactly killer reasons to upgrade. Question is which app is actually going to exploit 4GB+ and DX10 or 11 - surely the delay is the app suppliers can't target that platform unless a decent proportion of their customers are on it. At £10/GB we could be stuffing our PC's with memory if the games exploited it but they're not there.

Anyone know if Windows 7 improves XP with:

* better restart from hibernate or whatever so you rarely need to do a full shutdown and wait the reboot time ?

* rollback to those system checkpoints, i.e. if a virus has shagged up your machine does this do a better job of recovering from it?

* hardened browser usage - frankly I'd rather run the browser & email in a separate virtual machine if that's the main vector viruses are going to come in through.

* remote access to your PC (although I know this probably means yet another vector for viruses to exploit...)

Re: WINDOWS 7 PROS & CONS

Guys, having installed Win7 RC on my Virtualbox I can report the following:

* small partition creation during the installation - WTF?
* control panel must be the worst piece of user interface ever invented, I would even prefer command line to that
* seems quite fast virtualised
* never used Vista myself but UI looks very similar if not the same?
* I like that it's free to try until 2010 - I may even delete my virtual WinXP as I only use it for two pieces of software that do not work 100% under GNU/Linux, I'm sure they will by 2010 :)

Now, I truly believe that if someone wishes to use Windows for some sort of pr0n browsing, downloading cracks etc, you better use GNU/LInux (it's free) as your host machine and install Windows as a virtual system. You can then experiment with your win installation, download whatever you want and you can always revert back to a saved snapshot should you have security concerns.

I still think that GNU/Linux is these days superior to Windows (just compare the amount of improvement GNU/Linux has made compared to Windows in last few years). If you play games, you must have Windows, there is no doubt about that. Also, for people who like to customise their OS with themes, widgets and such - GNU/LInux is a much better platform because many things in Windows are locked the way they made it unless there is a control panel option for it or you install some hacky, paid for utility that will do the dirty job (or download a crack with virus in it).

No, I have to reboot to Win XP. At the moment, there is an experimental OpenGL support in Virtualbox so perhaps 3D support will be there some time down the line, however I realise it will never be like running a solid copy of Win.

For all those of you who would give GNU/Linux a try, install Virtualbox (free) and download one of many GNU/Linux distros (I run Ubuntu) - you can virtualise it easilly in your Virtualbox and see what it's all about. Not sure whether you'll get all the jazzy effects (Compiz) because 3D graphic support is needed.

I did try running CS:S on Ubuntu using Wine, it worked well (FPS around 80) but there is no microphone comms support at the moment.

Re: WINDOWS 7 PROS & CONS

The BBC #1 headline feature of Windows 7 is "multi-touch".

*** EDIT ***

no wait, there's more. Resizing windows is easier and there's a new start bar.

Re: WINDOWS 7 PROS & CONS

Good points raised here. For me, as an installer... id say, if it aint broke, dont fix it. Stick to what "works for you".

Drivers and compatibility is always an issue, but sometimes, you might get lucky and get things working, but the performance side is slightly sacrificed.

Install with caution and an open mind.... ;)
