NAS drive

Does anyone have any experience running a NAS in home network?
I am a total noob to this but need a storage solution for photography and video editing, and to run it as a plex server.
Was looking at Synology DS918+ –– seems overkill but i need to future-proof as the household grows and this looks hella user friendly.
A lot of people on reddit forums etc advise making your own but really i don't have time nor patience to get into this – shit looks technical.
